grass soccerMajeed checked his watch, it was five minutes before 7’oclock. It was almost time for the UEFA Champions league final match. He wouldn’t miss this for anything in the world, he said to himself. And then he remembered that it was almost time for Solatul Maghrib. “I would pray Maghrib and ‘Isha after the match” he concluded. “This match is a must-watch and solat can wait”.

.

prayer timesThe match was exciting, tense and suspense-filled as expected. It was an amazing match-up. It was Chelsea vs Bayern Munchen and this was expected. Chelsea won dramatically via penalties. The Chelsea fans were Jubilant and the Bayern fans downcast.  And then the unexpected happened;  an angry Bayern fan rammed his car into where the Chelsea fans stood celebrating their win and hit about five Chelsea supporters. Alas! Majeed was one of those hit. Two died on d spot while Majeed and two others made it to the hospital. He passed away a few minutes after reaching the hospital. His last words: “I wish I had prayed Maghrib and ‘Isha”.

.

This could have been me or you, since we never know when death is coming to us. We have to live in this world reminding ourselves of death every minute. Therefore, the love of Allah in our hearts should precede the love of any other things.

.

As Allah says in the Qur’an: “ And of mankind are some who take others beside Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe love Allah more (than anything else). If only those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment” (Quran, 2:165)

.

now or laterThis is the shirk we ignore every day, every minute of our lives, delaying the worship of Allah for a momentary pleasure of this dunya, loving other people or things at the expense of the love for Allah. We are not assured of the next minutes, yet we postpone the worship of Allah, we postpone alms-giving.

.

Allah says: “ Nay,  you prefer the life of this world, Although the hereafter is better and more lasting” (Quran, 87:16-17).

.

And as Rasulullah said in his farewell sermon: “… beware of satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost hope of leading you astray in the big things, so beware of following him in the small things. May Allah help us against the evil ploys of Shaytan ..
