Why & How Should We Remember Allah

Everyday, we should always strive to remember Allah (dhikr) much. And make supplication (du’aa) much too. Why?

Here are some reasons.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

“And the remembering (praising) of (you by) Allah (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising) of Allah in prayers]” (Quran; 29:45)

“Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying). I will remember you….” (Quran; 2:152)

“And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech – in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.” (Quran; 7:205)

“And remember Allah much, that you may be successful.” (Quran; 62:10)

“… And the men and the women who remember Allah much with their hearts and tongues. Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward (i.e., Jannah).” (Quran; 33:35)

“O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon [the early morning (Fajr) and `Asr prayers].” (Quran; 33:41,42)

“And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” (Quran; 20:124)

“….. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!” (Quran; 13:28)

“And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you…”
[Quran; 40: 60]

And here are a few Ahadeeth & Ahadeeth Qudsi…

.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“Allah says:

‘I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.’ “

“The comparison of the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not remember Allah, is like that of the living and the dead”

[al-Bukhaaree with al-Fat.h 11/208 and Muslim 1/539

Hadeeth of Abu Dharr al-Maqdisi that the Prophet (pbuh) says that

Allah says:

“O My slaves, all of you are astray except those whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance, and I will guide you. O My slaves, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask me for food and I will feed you. O My slaves, all of you are naked except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. … O My slaves, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to stand on a single plain and ask of Me and I were to give each one what he asked for, that would not cause any loss to Me greater than what is lost when a needle is dipped into the sea.”

Narrated by Muslim (2577)

Anas ibn Malik reported:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Let one of you ask his Lord concerning his needs, all of them, until he asks him even for a shoestring when his breaks.”

‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
“Ask Allah for everything, even shoelaces, because if Allah does not make it easy for you to obtain it you will not obtain it.”

Narrated by Abu Ya’la (8/44) and Ibn al-Sunni in ‘Aml al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah (349). It was also narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan (2/42) with a different isnaad.
It says in Majma’ al-Zawaa’id (10/150): its men are the men of saheeh.
Al-Albaani said in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah (1363): This is a jayyid mawqoof isnaad whose men are all thiqaat (trustworthy) and are the men of Muslim, End quote.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says that

Allah Most High says:

“He who is hostile to a friend of Mine I declare war against. My slave approaches Me with nothing more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My slave keeps drawing nearer to Me with voluntary works until I love him. And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he seizes, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks me, I will surely give to him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely protect him”

(Fath al-Bari, 11.34041, hadith 6502); This hadith was related by Imam Bukhari, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Bayhaqi, and others with multiple contiguous chains of transmission, and is sahih.

Here are a few more reasons mentioned in the Quran, in Hadeeth, in some articles or webpages:

How can we do dhikr and du’aa?

.

For daily duáa & dhikr

“Fortress of the Muslim” by Sa’id bin Wahf al-Quahtani (author) and Abdul Malik Mujahid (editor)

“This book is an abridgment of my earlier work entitled, Adh-Dhikr wad-Du’a wal-‘llaj bir-Ruqyah mina’-Kitab was-Sunnah. In order to make it small and easily portable, I have chosen only the section on words of remembrance for this abridgment. To achieve this, I only mentioned the text of the words of remembrance instead of the entire Hadith. I also limited myself to mentioning only one or two references from the original book for each Hadith. Whoever would like to know about the Companion who related a particular Hadith, or more information about where it is recorded, should refer to the original work (mentioned above). I ask Allah the Glorious, the Mighty, by His beautiful Names and by His sublime Attributes to accept this as having been done sincerely for His sake alone. I ask Him to bring me its benefits during my lifetime and after my death. May those who read it, those who print it, or have had any role in distributing it, benefit from it also. Surely He, glory be unto Him, is Capable of all things. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet, Muhammad, and upon his family and Companions and whoever follows them in piety until the Day of Judgment.” (Sheikh Sa’id bin Wahf al-Quahtani, author of the book)

“This is a MUST HAVE! This is a very beautiful booklet consisting of many authentic Dua’s (supplications) for a Muslim to supplicate on a daily basis and on special occasions. Dua is the weapon of the believer.” (reviewer)

.

For some easy dhikr and du’aa, look at these ideas, in shaa Allah:

(Note that not all of the ahadeeth quoted here on this list have been checked for its authenticity. If they have been checked, they usually will be mentioned. If they have not been checked, please do your own research, in shaa Allah. There is not enough time nor opportunity for me to check all of the isnaad. I apologise profusely for this shortcoming. I thank you for your patience and cooperation. JazakAllah khayran.)

Places and Times

There are places and times where duáa is more accepted (the way that we want it) than other times.

Here is a list, in shaa Allah, of some of them.
