Prayers Are Important

Salah comes from the word Silah. Silah means connection. Muslims are required to pray Salaah at least 5 times daily. Why? Indeed, there are many reasons. Firstly, we need it. Really? Yes. It is our five-daily essential and direct connection to God. God knows that we need to be connected to Him 5 times a day. He made us, right? So, certainly He knows us best and He knows what we need. Secondly, we need to praise Him, thank Him and ask Him to forgive us regularly. Thirdly, our 5 daily prayers will be the first thing that will be asked about on the Day of Judgement. Fourthly, when done properly it should prevent us from committing many sins and evil deeds. Fifthly, we need to collect plenty of Hasanat (good deed points) for the Day of Judgement. Sixthly, we need to gain God’s Mercy and what better way to earn His Pleasure and Mercy than to pray according to how He wants us to worship Him? And the list goes on. As you can see, there are many reasons that push us Muslims to pray our daily prayers. Let’s see if we can learn more from these videos below, insha Allah.

Some Quranic Reminders

  • Read Surah Az-Zumar (39), Ayah 53 to Ayah 75.
  • “Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers… If you fear (an enemy), pray on foot, or riding.”
    Qur’an 2:238-9
  • “Verily, prayer restrains (oneself) from shameful and unjust deeds…”
    Qur’an 29:45. Some other translations include: “…Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing..” (Source: quran.com/29). And “…Verily, prayer restrains (oneself) from shameful and unjust deeds..” (Source: islamicpamphlets.com/the-importance-of-prayer). And “…For sure, prayer prevents us from shamelessness and evil deeds…” (Source: perhaps Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan). Anyways…  [Nadwi has described this effect in the following eloquent way, Its aim is to generate within the subliminal self of man such spiritual power, light of faith and awareness of God as can enable him to strive successfully against all kinds of evils and temptations and remain steadfast at times of trial and adversity and protect himself against the weakness of the flesh and the mischief of immoderate appetites. [Nadwi, p. 24] ] {https://islamqa.info/en/answers/12305/the-importance-of-prayer}
  • “Without doubt, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction.”
    Qur’an 13:28
  • “Successful indeed are the believers, who are humble in their prayers.”
    Qur’an 23:1-2
  • Allah says:
“And perform prayer… surely the good deeds remove the evils deeds.”
    Qur’an 11:114
  • Allah says,
“Seek help in patience and prayer.”
    Qur’an 2:153
  • “O Mankind, What has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?”
Qur’an 82:06 (In other words, “What has made you abandon your Salaah? What has made you thought wrongly about Allah?”)
  • “Then, there has succeeded them a generation who have given up prayer and have followed their desires. So they will be thrown in Hell. Except those who repent and believe, and work righteousness.”
    Qur’an 19:59-60
  • “(The people in Hell will be asked:) What has caused you to enter Hell? They will say: We were not of those who used to pray…”
    Qur’an 74:42-43
  • Allah says,
“It is He who has created you and endowed you with hearing and seeing and hearts, little are you grateful.”
Qur’an 67:23 (Note: “How ungrateful are you, if you do not pray your 5 daily Salaah?”)
  • Allah says:
“And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed for him is a life of hardship. And We will raise him on the Day of Resurrection, blind. He will say, “My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was (once) seeing?” (Allah) will say, “Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot (disregarded) them; and thus will you, this Day, be forgotten.”
    Qur’an 20:124-6
  • “Give thanks to Allah, and whoever gives thanks, it is only for his own soul’s good, and whoever is ungrateful, surely Allah is Free of all needs, Worthy of all praise.”
Qur’an 31:12 (Note: If you don’t pray 5 times daily, you are not giving thanks to Allah, the minimum amount of thanks required, daily. You are harming your soul if you don’t pray.)
  • “Surely, the prayers are made obligatory for the believers at their prescribed times.”
Qur’an 4:103 (Note: Firstly. Are we believers or not? Secondly. We shouldn’t pray outside the prescribed times. Try to stick within the time limits. Some people push the prayers for later. Or combine all of the prayers at the end of the day. That is not right. It is dangerous.)

  • Allah says:  “And I did not create Jinn and humankind except to worship Me Alone” (Quran 51:56)
  • Allah says: “…glorify the Praises of your Lord, before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting. And during a part of the night (also) glorify His praises …” (Quran 50:39-40)

  • “And I have chosen you, so listen to that which is inspired to you. Verily, I am God! There is none worthy of worship but I, so worship Me and offer prayer perfectly for My remembrance.” (Quran 20:13-14) or for 20:14 –> “I am God; there is no god but Me. So worship Me and keep up the prayer so that you remember Me.”
  • “Verily, man was created impatient, irritable when evil touches him and ungenerous when good touches him. Except for those devoted to prayer those who remain constant in their prayers…” (Quran 70:19-23)

OTHER Quranic Reminders about how we should remember to be on the RIGHT path:

  • So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allah ], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do. (Quran; 11:112) Surah Hud Ayah 112
  • Quran 14:27 to 14: 34
  • “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (Quran; 99:7-8)

Some Hadith Reminders

  • “The closest a person is to His Lord is when he is in prostration.” (Sunan an Nasa’i)
  • The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When any one of you stands to pray, he is communicating with his Lord, so let him pay attention to how he speaks to Him.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The first of his deeds for which a man will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayers. If it is found to be perfect, he will be safe and successful. But if it is defective, he will be unfortunate and a loser.”
  • The Messenger gave a beautiful example when he said to his companions: “Consider if one of you had a river by his door in which he bathed five times a day. Would any filth remain on him?” They said, “No.” Then the Prophet replied: “Likewise, Allah wipes away sins with the five daily prayers.”
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Prayer in congregation is better than praying alone by twenty-seven degrees.”
  • The Prophet’s feet would sometimes get swollen because he would stand in prayer for lengthy periods, and when asked about this, he would reply: “Should I not be a grateful servant of my Lord?” (Note: How ungrateful to Allah are we? The Prophet prays until his feet swell because he was grateful to Allah. We can’t even do the 5 daily prayers? How ungrateful to Allah are we?)
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “On the Day of Resurrection the feet of the son of Adam will not move away till he is questioned about five matters: on what he spent his life; in doing what he made his youth pass away; where he acquired his property, and on what he spent it; and what he did regarding what he knew.”
  • “The covenant which distinguishes between us and them (i.e., between believers and disbelievers) is the prayer, and whoever neglects it has disbelieved.” (Note: Some scholars of Islam hold the opinion that the one who does not pray is a disbeliever. Additionally, some companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not consider the abandonment of any act as disbelief, except for prayer. )

  • “…so let the first thing to which you will invite them be the Oneness of God. If they learn that, tell them that God has enjoined on them, five prayers to be offered in one day and one night.” [Saheeh Al-Bukhari]
  • Prophet Muhammad said, “Pray as you have seen me pray”. [Saheeh Al-Bukhari]

(Source: https://www.islamreligion.com/articles/10272/viewall/wisdom-behind-postures-and-phrases-of-prayer/ & others)

  • The Prophet said, “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is incomplete, then the rest of his deeds will be incomplete.” [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is Sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol.1, p. 503.]
  • Once a man asked the Prophet about the most virtuous deed. The Prophet stated that the most virtuous deed is the prayer. The man asked again and again and for the first three times, the Prophet answered, “The prayer,” then on the fourth occasion he stated, “Jihad in the way of God.”[This is form a hadith recorded by Ahmad and ibn Hibban. According to al-Albani, the hadith is hasan. Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, Sahih al-Targheeb wa al-Tarheeb (Beirut: al-Maktab al-Islami, 1982), vol. 1, p. 150]
  • The Messenger of God said, “God has obligated five prayers. Whoever excellently performs their ablutions, prays them in their proper times, completes their bows, prostrations and khushu*, has a promise from God that He will forgive him. And whoever does not do that has no promise from God. He may either forgive him or punish him.” (Note: As for the Hereafter, God’s forgiveness and pleasure is closely related to the prayers.) [This Hadeeth is recorded by Malik, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’I and others. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol. 1, p. 616. ] * Khushu – Khushu` in the prayer is where the person’s heart is attuned to the prayer. This feeling in the heart is then reflected on the body. The person remains still and calm. His gaze is also lowered. Even his voice is affected by this feeling in the heart. For more details on this concept (as well as the difference between it and khudhu`), see Muhammad al-Shaayi, al-Furooq al-Laughawiyyah wa Atharahaa fi Tafseer al-Quran al-Kareem (Riyadh: Maktabah al-Ubaikaan, 1993), pp. 249-254.
  • “If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it five times a day, do you think he would have any filth left on him?” The people said, “No filth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet then said, “That is like the five daily prayers: God wipes away the sins by them.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)
  • the Prophet said, “The five daily prayers and the Friday Prayer until the Friday prayer are expiation for what is between them.” (Saheeh Muslim)

Other Notes:

“Prayer is the greatest pillar of Islam after the Shahaadatayn. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Between a person and kufr and shirk stands the abandonment of prayer.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2766. Classed as saheeh by Ibn Maajah, 1078,and by al-Albaani).
Salaah is so called because it is a connection (silah) between a person and his Lord. Whoever does not pray, his zakaah, fasting, Hajj, jihaad, enjoining of what is good, forbidding of what is evil, reading of Qur’aan and upholding of family ties will not be accepted. Indeed, all his good deeds will be rejected if he does not pray.

The scholars, including Imaam Ahmad, said that whoever does not pray should be executed as a kaafir, and his body should not be washed or shrouded, the funeral prayer should not be offered over him, he should not be buried in the Muslims’ graveyard and his Muslim heirs cannot inherit from him.

It is not permissible for you to abandon prayer, because you never know when death will catch you unawares.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said at the end of his life, during his final sickness:
“(Adhere to) prayer, (adhere to) prayer and (take care of) those whom your right hands possess (i.e., slaves).”
(Narrated by Imaam Ahmad, 3/117; Ibn Maajah, 2697; Ibn Hibbaan, 1220. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Irwaa’, no.2178).

Prayer is the pillar of Islam. Imaam Ahmad said: Your share of Islam is according to your share of prayer. What we want for you is for you to pray regularly, doing the prayers on time with the Muslims in their mosques. It is haraam for you to abandon prayer, for abandoning it is kufr. This issue has been discussed in great detail by the scholars in their books. And it was said that (the one who abandons prayer) is to be executed as a punishment, as is well known. And Allaah knows best. ”
