The Ummah inspires me!

Teaching a class recently I talked about getting our priorities straight.

.

plane cartoonTo explain I mentioned a situation where an elderly Muslim brother was being neglected by his kids who had grown up and moved away.  This past Eid, they refused to come visit him.  So he flew out to where they live, got a cab, and stayed at a hotel to be able to spend some time with family on Eid.

.

Now, it’s fairly obvious what’s wrong here.

.

sad smileyFirst, it’s sad to see elderly parents abandoned by their children after everything that they have done for them.  Most of the time when we talk about rights of the parents, it’s directed towards younger people.

.

smiley_on_phoneHowever we need to understand that our parents still have rights over us even when we’re older.  In my experience, parents are severely neglected and even abandoned by their kids when they’ve grown up.  The tragedy is that this is the time when their parents need their kids the most.

.

At the same time, and I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but parents who find themselves in this type of a situation need to reflect on how they raised their children and what they taught them.

.

.

money-Adults who will send money to their elderly parents but not make time for them or spend any time with them are often times the results of parents who similarly spent money on their children but did not make time for them.

.

However, the purpose of my post was to share how the Ummah inspires me.  Too often we talk about and focus on what’s wrong with the Ummah and it can be a little demoralizing.

.

So just as I look for inspiration from time to time, I thought to share this with everyone here.

.

hopeAfter I spoke about the above stated issue recently, I received an email from a family whom I do not know personally nor do they know this elderly Muslim brother personally.

.

I have copied the email below while of course omitting personal details from the email.  Please read and be inspired!

Assalamalekum Sheikh

islamicfamily-hideandseekDuring the presentation in ____ yesterday you mentioned that there was an elder you knew of who had a hard time connecting with his family for Eid celebrations due to their busy schedules. InshaAllah we wanted to welcome him to our home for Eid and other times inshaAllah. We are all one family in Islam inshaAllah. InshaAllah I look forward to hearing from you. Masalam
